What Does the Expert Say About FatCow?

FatCow

FatCow is an intriguing webhost that offers a full-featured plan with a wide range of sophisticated options at a bargain price: $56.04 per year, or $4.67 per month. When FatCow launched, this plan was actually $99 per year, so they’ve been selling this plan at a significant reduction. That has made them quite popular, and I figured it was time to assess FatCow for myself, and determine whether this new low price came at the cost of diminished performance and satisfaction. Based on what I’d been hearing, I didn’t think this would be the case, but of course, I wanted to experience it for myself.

Value for Money

Unlike so many other webhosts, FatCow has just the one package, and this makes the entire process rather simple. There are no setup fees or activation fees, and activation is instantaneous. If you want to commit to 24 months, you can even reduce your rate to $3.67 per month, or $88 per year. I was concerned that FatCow does not offer a month-by-month payment plan, but they do allow you to opt out within the first month, no questions asked, so I went ahead and took the plunge.

At both $4.67 and $3.67 per month, FatCow gives you a free domain, unlimited disk space, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited subdomains, unlimited email accounts, built-in point-and-click site builders that are extremely newbie friendly, powerful online store tools, blogs, photo galleries and so forth. Available applications include WordPress, phpBB, Joomla, Gallery2, GBook and more. They even toss in $150 worth of free advertising with big names, such as Google, Yahoo!, Bing, Facebook and so on.

Performance & Reliability

On their main site, FatCow does not actively promote their uptime, so there are no bold claims. However, that lack of attention to uptime had me a little concerned, and I actually had to dig a bit to find numbers and then confirm them. I was actually surprised at what I found because the number since November 2005 is quite respectable: 99.853%. The only negative is that FatCow seems to experience a small outage nearly every month, but it’s usually less than an hour and often as low as 15 minutes.

During the month that I tested FatCow for the purpose of this review, there wasn’t any downtime at all, and the site ran without hitch. On the 29th day of service, I even called to inquire about opting out of my 12-month contract. Although I didn’t actually want to opt out, their 30-day no-questions-asked money-back guarantee is an important consideration since they don’t offer monthly contracts. Therefore, I wanted to put it to the test. They asked me some questions about why I was leaving, and then they began the opt-out process in a very professional manner. They were also quite graceful when I came clean about my intentions.

Support

FatCow is active about promoting their “Moo Crew” 24/7 customer support, and they even have a “HeiferCratic Oath,” which details their promise to the customer. I experienced their excellent support firsthand when I called to opt out. I also had an opportunity to experience it during the sign-up process via live chat. Live chat can be a little impersonal, so I was pleasantly surprised at how well FatCow overcomes those limitations. I asked them a series of questions, each question more difficult than the last. Where do you maintain your servers? What are the restrictions, such as attachment size, related to the email accounts? Finally, how do I set up URL redirection? In each case, the agent was helpful, knowledgeable and concise, and in the case of the redirection, the agent walked me through the process.

• Phone
• Live Chat
• Support Console (requires login)
• Support Ticket System
• Feedback System
• Knowledgebase

As you can see - finding a way of getting in contact with the support won't be difficult.

Ease of use

The control panel has gotten a new sleek design that I really like. Everything is easy to find and it’s extremely user-friendly. This is the perfect control panel if you like things uncomplicated. I know that I do.

We like

• Their impressive customer service, which includes extremely brief wait times.
• That they have a wide range of tutorials for supported applications and built-in modules.
• That FatCow gave us no trouble trying to use the 30-day guarantee.

Important to know

• FatCow does not provide an uptime guarantee.

Summary

I’ve tested a wide range of webhosts, and rarely have I had an initial experience that went as smoothly as this one did. FatCow is an excellent webhost, and I’d recommend them to any individual. The service is even robust enough to support large Web enterprises. However, FatCow’s unwillingness or inability to offer an uptime guarantee may be a deal-breaker even for small businesses. You can rely on at least 15 minutes of downtime every month, and for high-volume websites that do business around the clock, that loss of revenue during those 15 minutes can offset any savings gained. For the personal user, you’re not going to find any webhost deals that are much better than this one is.

Rory does not recommend FatCow

FatCow hosting is reliable, and the speed is good for the
price.

FatCow support is appalling - dishonest, poorly trained and
without authority to fix many common problems. Mostly, they
just copy and paste paragraphs from their help pages. If
that doesn't get rid of you, they lie, say they have fixed
the issue, and tell you to wait 24-48 hours. When you come
back you are someone else's problem.

FatCow control panel is well laid out. Unfortunately, it is
also buggy, and Domain Central can crash and create "Zombie"
DNS records that cannot be deleted by the user.

Its taken two weeks to migrate my websites across, and more
than thirty ticket messages and a dozen chat conversations,
and still the... Read more

I don't remember exactly why I chose Fat Cow. It may have
been the price at the time.

It has been a little over 2 years and I am not happy with
their hosting.

Their customer service is not helpful. They send you links
to a page on their site that explains how to handle your
problem rather than handle it themselves. Most of the time
you're talking to an outsourced call center on the other
side of the globe.

I've had several occasions where my page would refuse to
load. When contacting Fat Cow they'd say, "Looks fine on our
end."
Oh thats great, glad you can see my site and I can't. Guess
I'll get going.

Moreover, they really aren't that cheap... Read more

Chuck Hinkle does not recommend FatCow

I've been using FatCow for at least about ten years. Until
recently, I've been so satisfied with them that when I
became the webmaster for volunteer organizations, I'd move
to FatCow. I found FatCow inexpensive, quick to respond, and
very reliable. I like the email manager that they have.

Unfortunately, that's recently changed (in 2014), and that's
why I'm starting to look for a new provider. A lot of
spammers must've found FatCow, because now I'm starting to
get my mail blocked. AT&T particularly likes to block FatCow
mail. And, my main client blocks the mail provider that
FatCow uses (Yourhostingaccount.com) because they tell me
that they get way more spam through this mail server.

I've talked to FatCow support about it,... Read more

Gary Bert recommends FatCow

I used Fat Cow for about 3 years and recently cancelled or
rather did not renew. They provided good service, technical
support, and had a good up time. Overall a good service.
The reason for not renewing is their pricing keeps
increasing and what should have been a reasonable fee for
this service ended up as a $400 per year fee, way past
reasonable. I also found that the services changed and would
find my site had also changed as they added and deleted
options. This makes it difficult to remain consistent ona
site.
Overall I like Fat Cow and would consider returning but only
if their fees did not continually climb. There are other
services that do the same for... Read more

30-day money back guarantee, unlimited this, unlimited that,
so I thought it's a good deal. I used fatcow services for
close to one year (paying $55USD for hosting+domain+domain
privacy) and technically everything seemed ok. Their support
is polite and were resolved couple of tecnical problems I
ran into in the beginning. Although their human response on
chat is not as fast because they use chat robot which
generates automatic messages, general responses that hold
you on the chat, but after some time you will know it is not
a human (they repeat).
But, BEWARE! They will charge you the service they DO NOT
provide. I thought it is impossible nowadays that somebody
would cheat the customers like that, but I felt it... Read more

I am using fatcow hosting plan to host a site built on
Silverstripe CMS.

It's working well after a few tricks. Only negative thing I
have noticed are that my DNS lookups take some time. Might
be because I'm used to having my hosting geographically
closer to me.

Had some problems signing up because the signup form didn't
validate non US phone numbers. The customer support were
helpful though (of course!).
Next problem were that my domain had not been registered,
and had to be done so manually. Again the staff were very
helpful.

Make sure to set your session path in the php.ini file, you
get a special interface to these configs in the control
panel. Also change log and cache paths to... Read more

Everything with FatCow webhosting has been wonderful. You get many ad and other service credits to use on other sites. They offer all services imaginable including hosting, domain names, email, marketing, and other scripting options. The only problem I do have is with their email service. It never works and is very complicated to get set up. I have been talking with support teams too much about this problem. On the positive note it is possible to forward your mail to your own mail server which they claim will have many less issues. The best feature of fatcow webhosting is their tech support. I've been with Fatcow for at least 5 years. They have hosted our community theatre website and my school website. The school page is visited by parents and students on a daily basis and it hosts large amounts of dynamic content. There has been almost no downtime and all file transfers occur quickly. The admin interface gives you ultimate control and I've used many of Fatcows online tools. I enjoy running a php based chat board, setting up user forms and databases with ultimate ease. FatCow is the best hosting site I've found yet. As a web developer, I need quality features, reliable uptime, good pricing, and easy access to support. FatCow has exceeded my expectations for all of these things. They offer easy scripts for installation, live chat support and full control over every aspect of hosting. I'm relatively new to the world of websites and blogging, but I was recommended to host with Fat Cow by a professional web designer, so I jumped. It feels great to know that they're 100% wind-powered, first of all, and their whole interface is based on cartoons, which makes everything a little bit more fun. On serious matters, I have found their interface very easy to learn as a new user of hosting, and the few times I've had to contact them for support, I've received a very thorough return email in an hour or less. The web site works pretty well. A friend of mine set it up--I don't know the technicalities of web design, but she thought Fat Cow offers a well-run system. Billing is a nightmare with these people. I was not informed that the initial fee was for the first year only--they made it sound like this is their regular fee. Renewal for the second year was more than double. We've been mostly pleased with FatCow. They have a great price and good support, and their account interface is a major upgrade from horrible cPanel. We did have an outage a few months ago where all of FatCow sites were down. We didn't get any notification of it and just had to wait until service was restored. But they have great customer service and their auto-backups have saved us a few times. FatCow is definitely the way to go for low-cost hosting.
