How to Edit Your Profile in WordPress
WordPress is an advanced website platform that is for much more than just blogging. In fact, few content management systems offer the vast array of functionality that WP does. One of WordPress’ most popular features is its user profiles. In this sense, user refers both to visitors of the website and the website administration. At least, user profiles are a username and email address that WordPress exposes to all registered users of the site. At best, user profiles are powerful tools. They allow users to expose information about themselves to the community, and they provide persistence for user-specific settings, such as color schemes and editor preferences.
How to Edit Your Profile in WordPress
• This video tutorial assumes that you have already logged in to your WordPress account.
• After doing so, you should be at the WordPress dashboard main page.
• Locate the tabbed links in the left-hand navigation column.
• Click the ‘Users’ tab, which will reveal a user options submenu.
• Click the ‘Your Profile’ option, which is the last link in the Users submenu.
• That will navigate you to a page labeled ‘Profile.’
• Here, WordPress organizes the various profile settings into categories.
• Depending on your screen size, you may need to scroll down to see all categories.
• The ‘Personal Options’ category contains settings related to the color scheme and visual editor.
• The ‘Name’ category contains settings for admin names, usernames and username display options.
• By default, ‘First Name’ and ‘Last Name’ will be blank, so fill those out, if you wish.
• The ‘Contact Info’ category contains settings that allow others uses to contact you.
• An e-mail address is there by default. You can also add an AIM address and another website.
• The ‘Biographical Info’ category lets you create profile text that will be publically available.
• Lastly, click the blue oval button on the bottom labeled ‘Update Profile.’
• If successful, there will be two success confirmations.
• One will be an orange message box that reads, “Your profile has been updated.”
• The second will be an in-page notification that reads, “User updated.”
More about WordPress and WordPress Profiles
Profiles are a key feature of the WordPress architecture. For admin, they make it possible to have an admin-only community while still being part of the greater community. For users, they provide a way of interfacing with the community while having complete control over what information you expose. Users can allow for contact while still protecting the actual address, and they can expose additional contact options, such as website URLs, AIM, Yahoo IM, Jabber, Google Talk and so forth. WP profiles also house important information, such as passwords and preferences. It is within the profile configuration that the use can (re)set his or her password, and determine password strength. Users can also custom tailor visual preferences to their liking and persist them in the user profile.
