How to Create a Subdomain

As the content of your website grows and the needs of your web enterprise expand, you may find that you need to create additional subdomains. These subdomains will enable you to manage the files and areas of your site to best direct the traffic around the pages and manage the work that your designers put in on each area. A subdomain is often expressed in terms of the parent website like this: subdomain.websiteurl.com. This makes it easy for visitors to differentiate between different sections of the site that have different content or functions. You are basically setting up smaller sites within your site. And while it involves a bit of specialized jargon, your cPanel controls make it easy to add, manage and delete as many subdomains as you want.

How to Create a Subdomain

  1. Make sure you are logged in to your cPanel account
  2. When the main landing page loads, scroll down
  3. Click on the "Subdomain" icon
  4. This will bring up a box for you to enter the prefix to the URL for the subdomain you want to create
  5. Click the "Document Root" box to bring up the default directory for the new subdomain
  6. Click the "Create" button
  7. That's it, the subdomain is created
  8. Click "Go Back"
  9. This process also creates a folder with the same name as the subdomain where files can be stored
  10. The new subdomain folder is listed on the Subdomain page
  11. You can also grant FTP access to the subdomain from this page
