How to Back Up Your Website

Now that you have a website up and running and you have loaded up your important files, images and other assets, it's a good idea to back everything up. Too many times has a good site gone haywire, only to leave the owners with a wiped out set of files and no alternative but to rebuild the site. There are a variety of possible risks, from power surges to hacker attacks. And it only gets harder to anticipate where the possible damage will come from. So if you're ready to go beyond the basics and really maintain a woking website, you absolutely need to back up your site's files. Luckily, in cPanel, one of the most popular web-hosting control interfaces, it is relatively easy to back everything up. Follow these easy steps outlined below.

How to Back Up Your Website

  1. Make sure you are already logged in to your cPanel account
  2. Scroll down to check out your options
  3. Click the "Back Up" button
  4. If you wish, you can select from daily, weekly and monthly update options
  5. If you want to back up now, scroll down to manually back up files
  6. Choose to back up the home directory
  7. Or choose to back up the MySQL directory
  8. Or choose to back it all up with "Full back up"
  9. Set the destination for the back up files to go to a remote FTP server
  10. Enter email address
  11. Enter remote server where you want the files to go
  12. Enter FTP user name
  13. Enter FTP Password
  14. Click Generate Back up
  15. To back up only certain parts of the site, click "Go Back" to get to the selection page
  16. Click the button to back up the Home Directory
  17. Find the directory in the box that appears
  18. Click ok. It is now backed up to your local computer
  19. To restore a file, click "Go Back"
  20. Select a particular file to restore
  21. Click Restore button, and file has been restored
