The Importance of Great Web Design

It’s now the year of 2008 and still many sites look as if they were done in 1998 – why is that? I mean honestly, I can’t come up with any good answers to this question. Setting up a good looking site is easy as A, B, C nowadays and you really don’t have to be an expert web designer to do it. For no cost at all you can get the help you need, through various programs and software, and it’s simply just to follow the instructions. I’m looking forward to see what sites/blogs that will present themselves in the contest that my fellow blogger Brian announced earlier this week. If you don’t know what I’m talking about then please that a look at his latest post. That’s all for this time. Cheers!

I'm a designer and I do relate to your point.

However, looking at the bigger picture, it's more important to concentrate on good marketing and promotion. There's no point having the best looking site if no one ever gets to see it. people often concentratre on good web design, for their own personal eye candy. However, they must always remember that simplictiy is best, with an excellent product and good marketing. Focus on the customer.

Just look at Google. Great design?

I don't know if I agree with you here David... Overall I think most sites look good - or at least ok.

That always was a mystery to me as well. I still see plenty of websites(some on some pretty large companies) that look like some old 90s website you would see. I guess its because of the lack of talent coming into web design lately.

I also wonder, why they just dont buy some cheap but good looking template? This would take them less time and give them a much better result.

Yes, it will look like a template and be less unique, but that sure does beat the alternative 90s style website.
