Rackspace to Kill Slicehost, Migrate Customers to Cloud

Rackspace, the cloud hosting giant who acquired Slicehost back in 2008, has announced to put an end to it asking customers to migrate to Rackspace Cloud. This announcement came by the Rackspace Vice president for Products, Mark Interrante, via an email yesterday.

Rackspace

Interrante in his email explained that they have to deal with two brands, two control panels and two sets of Support, Engineering and Operations teams which has become challenging with ever increasing user base. Moreover the shift from IPv4 to IPv6 and advancements in OpenStack technology also compelled them to make this tough decision.

A good thing about this decision is that Rackspace has given its customers a whole year before they all should migrate to Rackspace Cloud:

"I understand this is big news, and I want to give us a chance to discuss it over the coming weeks and months. We will convert current Slicehost accounts to Rackspace Cloud Servers accounts over the next year."

Slicehost

Slicehost after only two years of its birth became famous among web hosting services. Its unique offering of VPS (virtual private servers) and reliability made Rackspace to acquire this newly born company. However, in an interview, Mark Interrante confessed that they are investing more in Rackspace Cloud than Slicehost.

"There's more development on the Rackspace cloud from a feature perspective and growing the product. We want to get the best experience for our customers and the best experience is going to be on Rackspace."

So far the reaction at Slicehost forum is mixed. Some customers are happy with the announcement while others took it as a bad news. Many are reporting to migrate to another VPS service. Some say that even if they go through migrating burden, the Rackspace Cloud would cost more.

On the other side, Rackspace has ensured that, although its cloud works on a different pricing model, for most of the customers there won’t be any increase in price. Moreover they are promising a seamless shift from Slicehost to Cloud Servers and started a new section at forums for the sole purpose.
