Killing Web Hosting Myths

We’ve all heard them and sometimes we’ve also believed but I thought that it was time for me, with this blog posts, kill some of those hosting myths that are out there. You’ve probably already heard of the myths that I will talk about here but what the hey… Feel free to leave comments with some of your favorite myths. It’s all good fun!

Web Hosts Offer Unlimited Bandwidth

This can’t really be true can it as there is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth. Many of the cheaper hosting plans include the words “unlimited bandwidth” and it can’t be explained as anything else than false advertising. What they’re really talking about is the amount of possible data transfer and that amount is never limited – they’re making false promises. How come they can do this then? Well, their customers probably never will fill the maximum amount of data so they’re bending the truth a tad…

Web Hosts Offer Unlimited Disk Space

Exactly as with the web hosts offering unlimited bandwidth are the ones claiming to offer unlimited disk space just making false promises. There is no such thing as unlimited disk space and companies boosting that they’re offering their clients this are probably offering much less disk space than you thought instead.

Your Website Will Never be down

Web hosts guaranteeing 99% uptime (almost all companies today) often make it sound as if your website never be down. With simple mathematics you’ll come to the conclusion that 1% equals 3,5 days of downtime. Yes, they’re not lying with 99% uptime but you have to agree with me that it sounds much better than it actually is.

I have read this post and actually, after reading it, I just laughed... :D

Because all of it was true, web hosting providers should not use "unlimited" to attract customers. I dont know what word will exactly describe it but, as a web hosting provider, we really can promise an unlimited disk space and bandwidth. Although we have those packages that states what bandwidth and disk space you can use, but once you exceeded the quota, you will receive a notification that you have exceeded this and that. We will then charge you for that. And advice you to upgrade to much higher plan.

By the way, we are located in the Philippines but we also target those "soon to be clients" outside the country.

Anyway, Sir David, I suggest, you also put the myth about, 24/7 support... :D

Not all web hosting providers provide that kind of service. Some just dont provide phone support, email, just online ticketing system that will reply to your inquiry and then nothing was done.

In choosing a web hosting provider, a real technical support must answer all the problems that the client will encounter.

Thanks Sir David for this wonderful article, it made me laugh actually... :D

I have written many posts on unlimited space/bandwidth, however I never thought to cover the 99.99% uptime guarantee myth. You just gave me the idea for one of my next blog posts.
