IPv6 in 2012

The latest annual survey on global IPv6 deployment was recently released. The survey, conducted by GNKS Consult, an independent research firm that since 2006 has reported on trends and plans for the Internet, was prepared for the Number Resource Organization (NRO), a partnership of the world's five Regional Internet Registries that manage the allocation and registration of IP addresses for the entire Internet.

IPv6 is the version of the Internet Protocol designed to succeed the current Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4). It is well-known that IPv4 can only support a bit over four billion IP addresses, a pool soon to be exhausted. IPv6 supports 2 to the 128th or about 340 undecillion IP addresses -- in addition, IPv6 eliminates the need for Network Address Translation (NAT) and adds more flexibility to traffic routing and address allocation on the Internet.

The survey collected responses from over 1600 organizations involved in providing Internet infrastructure in 135 countries. Over half of those surveyed were actual Internet service providers (ISPs); almost three-quarters were in the commercial sector. As the pool of IPv4 addresses comes closer to being exhausted, all the organizations surveyed continue to make a high priority effort their communications to their customers and clients about the vital importance of the upcoming IPv6 switchover.

Over 70% of those surveyed plan to deploy IPv6 in 2012 -- only 7% said they will not be deploying IPv6 in 2012. Of those respondents who have already begun to set up an IPv6 infrastructure, over 80% are using the dual-stack concept, with both IPv4 and IPv6 running on the same hardware -- in other words, few have set up hardware solely devoted to running IPv6. 56% report that customers have asked them to start up their IPv6 switchover, though very few customers have actually begun to use IPv6 -- only 15% of the respondents report a customer base usage of IPv6 above 1% and 80% report that their total IPv6 traffic is "insignificant." The reasons reported for wanting to move over to IPv6, other than customer demand, are the expected operational benefits and the desire to get ahead of the adoption curve.

Most of the concerns over the deployment of IPv6, such as cost, lack of knowledge base and lack of vendor support, have diminished since 2010's survey -- the security implications of IPv6 is the only concern, however, that has increased in importance among those surveyed. The NRO affirms that this aspect is reflected in the discussions occurring on their technical forums.

The results of the survey, titled The Global IPv6 Deployment Monitoring Survey 2011, can be seen online as a PDF on the NRO website.
