Flash based web ads have become expected these days and almost every major ad network offers flash based dynamic advertisement. A new internet campaign called "Flash Ads are Broken" is focused on stopping Flash ads from creating nasty overlays and destroying website designs. The campaign says the real issue is that site owners can’t actually fix the problem on their end and it’s up to the ad networks, especially Google, to make changes.
The campaign was launched last week and states that flash ads make overlays and designs that don't match a webpage's theme and destroys the layout of the page. These ads are usually bright with funky colors and misplaced alignment that destroy the impact of the website theme. What makes it worse is that website owners cannot fix this issue themselves; it solely relies on the ad networks to provide more controls to the advertisers.
According to the compaign page, "It’s all about wmode, a parameter that specifies how a flash object is rendered on a webpage. wmode needs to be explicitly set to opaque or transparent. If it is not, no elements on the webpage can go above the flash." The objective of the campaign is to pressure the major ad networks, into changing the wmode parameters. The website explains the issue and provides a form for developers to submit screenshots of the aforementioned issue.
However, the above stated solution will increase the CPU load while rendering the flash content, something that is already believed to be a major problem, especially with underpowered machines such as netbooks. Another way out is to switch to HTML5 that provides almost the same content and requires less system resources. It is high time that ad providers and Adobe sit together to provide a solution that will make the web faster and cleaner.
