The event focuses on solving difficult algorithms and tested against time. The test composed of three rounds; in each round, the hackers were given three difficult problems to solve that were developed by Facebook engineers. There was only one correct answer to each problem.
These hackers represents various nationalities that includes 7 from Poland, 6 from Russia, 4 from the U.S.A, 2 from Japan and 1 each from Singapore, Ukraine, Netherlands, Germany, China and Switzerland. According to David Alves, a software engineer at Facebook, although these algorithms stand for a marvel in complexity, they do not necessarily represent real world problems and might not be taken to judge job skills. Hence, it is not supposed to be a recruiting event, though all the participants were encouraged to apply for jobs at the social media giant once the event ended.
The winner will receive a Hacker Cup Trophy and a T-Shirt reading "There can be only one" with the name of the winner engraved on it. The top three finalists will also receive checks of $5000, $2000 and $1000 for the first, second and third positions respectively. Facebook plans to hold such events annually and possibly expand it in an effort to promote engineering-driven sports.
