The Logic of Local Hosting!

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Hi all!

Just thoughts I would touch upon the issue of local or remote web hosting. Of course I’m not talking in technical terms, but geographical. Local being in the same country, state or region and remote being in freaking Never land. No, but on a more serious note there are few good reasons why you should not choose hosting closer to where you live, rather than far away. No different language, no different culture, no different time zones. Those are three basic reasons why youshould think domestic.

Additionally to these rock solid facts, the chances are you haven’t even bothered to check the offers in your own neighboorhood due to what I like to call Bling blindness. Of course the risk exsists that you won’t get the cheapest price in your own country but try to think like this: You Get What YouPay For. If you pay an extra couple of dollars a month you’ll not only get what you pay for, but the absense of our recently mentioned 3 facts. Think about it at least :-)

This is an issue we have chosen to address, not only here on the blog but in our geographical toplists. You can find your country and web hosting type listed according to price, service and quality. Start by selecting hosting type in the top tabs in the index page.

Killing Web Hosting Myths

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

We’ve all heard them and sometimes we’ve also believed but I thought that it was time for me, with this blog posts, kill some of those hosting myths that are out there. You’ve probably already heard of the myths that I will talk about here but what the hey… Feel free to leave comments with some of your favorite myths. It’s all good fun!

Web Hosts Offer Unlimited Bandwidth

This can’t really be true can it as there is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth. Many of the cheaper hosting plans include the words “unlimited bandwidth” and it can’t be explained as anything else than false advertising. What they’re really talking about is the amount of possible data transfer and that amount is never limited – they’re making false promises. How come they can do this then? Well, their customers probably never will fill the maximum amount of data so they’re bending the truth a tad…

Web Hosts Offer Unlimited Disk Space

Exactly as with the web hosts offering unlimited bandwidth are the ones claiming to offer unlimited disk space just making false promises. There is no such thing as unlimited disk space and companies boosting that they’re offering their clients this are probably offering much less disk space than you thought instead.

Your Website Will Never be down

Web hosts guaranteeing 99% uptime (almost all companies today) often make it sound as if your website never be down. With simple mathematics you’ll come to the conclusion that 1% equals 3,5 days of downtime. Yes, they’re not lying with 99% uptime but you have to agree with me that it sounds much better than it actually is.

Web Designer Guide & New Interviewees

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

One of our teammates is undertaking a massive project. She is creating a comprehensive guide of freelance web designers and small web design companies located all over the US and the world. What’s the purpose of this guide you ask? In Eva’s words: “This guide will aide visitors in finding a web designer in their local area. Say you want to start a website and sell hats and you are based in Tennessee but you have no idea how to make a website. Well, you can look at our list of designers, find one in Tennessee and connect. Instead of searching on Google everywhere, this list already has great designers since WHS has contact with every company listed. We also geographically separated them since many people want to work with someone in their area.”

Well put Eva. If you are a freelancer or own a small company, definitely get in touch with us. You can drop a comment below. =)

And number two on the list: interviews. We started interviewing some very famous CSS blog owners, Chris Coyier, David Walsh, and a few others. An internationally famous illustrator has also agreed and two PHP developers. We are very excited to hear what they say.

With that, happy Friday and a great weekend.

The Human Web Hosting Glossary

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Hey all!

After being in the web hosting business and blogging for WebHostingSearch.com for some time now stumbeling upon tricky terms and words you’ve never heard of, seems like everyday life. But you live and you learn and by now I feel like a human dictionary when it comes to web hosting. Countless hours have I spent trying to find proper explanations to new words and to my disappointment I had a hard time finding good resources. Digital and online technology being so fluid new words and names arise every week. Even if you are a web hosting guru, it is virtually impossible to keep track of all the new lingo.

So to contribute to this miserable situation, if any of you are in need of explanation concerning web hosting lingo simply comment on this post with your Q’s.

Think you’re cool to be interviewed? Read on…

Friday, August 15th, 2008

We’re working on a major expansion of the site which will take place sometime in the near future. Okay, that was really specific. We cannot disclose a whole lot (clandestine operations you know ;) ) but we are hoping to interview lots of people in the web world. This just would not be hosting providers but also web designers, programmers, and website geeks.

If you know someone we should interview, post here. And maybe add why you think they are cool to be interviewed.

On that note, happy Friday to all. Be safe and find your designated driver when partying. =)

Hostingcon 2008, a recap

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

So I didn’t post on the 30th as it was a busy day to close out the conference. I did not attend any of the sessions, although there was one I really wanted to attend. The exhibition hall was slow and it provided a good opportunity to speak to the company representatives on a more personal level. We were quite excited to find out that some of the companies want to work with us on future media and press information.

And now, some interesting tidbits from the conference-

  • Social media is an important form of connecting with consumers
  • IPv4 is running out and IPv6 will take affect in two years
  • Spam is increasing exponentially and is still everyone’s nightmares
  • SaaS (software a a service) is becoming increasing popular as a mode of deployment for software. For customers, SaaS is easy to maintain since the updating and maintenance occurs on the host’s side.
  • Green hosting was not a crucial issue.  I currently believe that green hosting will be the next step in as companies become more environmentally friendly.  Hopefully, it will become more important in the upcoming years with newer technologies to complement it.
  • Product branding is vital for hosting companies even though consumers see hosting as a standard good.

If you have questions, feel free to post comments.  We appreciate what you think.

The WWW Monopoly

Monday, August 11th, 2008

On most markets there are favorite brands that has the full attention and fascination of consumers. This competition hierarchie is not at all uncommon and perhaps even the only alternative for any industry today. But the reason for this consumer concetration can also be due to consumer habbits. Of course, the best product or service will get the most attentions and companies like Coca-Cola, YouTube and Wal-Mart indeed deliver more enhanced products that their competitors. But sometimes the line between market leader and second best is thin, almost impossible to see. The online business, to me, seems full of such examples and I can’t help but think that consumer loyalty and straight layzeness is the cause why so many sites have the monopoly in their niche.

If we would only bother to google a bit more for alternative e.g video hosts and communities YouTube and Facebook wouldn’t be able to take their domination for granted. Or maybe we need to encourage more people to start own video hosts and online platforms. Maybe then there wouldn’t only be 1 site in monopoly for each market.

A Scam Was in the Air

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Yes, I was in Chicago for the annual Hostingcon conference and one of the big talks for this event was a lottery with a Harley Davidson valued at over $12,000 as the first prize. The point of it all was to show that all of us hosting geeks also could be cool (sigh…).

Anyways, the companies responsible for this competition was Gawkwire, DesignVAR, Host4Yourself, BobCares, The Cloud Talk, CRE Loaded and SeeksAdmin. And I can tell you that there were many wishing to win that bike, including yours truly, and the expectations were running high. What should have been a fun and joyful competition ended up as somewhat of a … In lack of better words – it ended up as somewhat of a scam! You see, once they had a winner it turned out that he only had 1 chance in 250 to win the bike.

I can promise all of you that weren’t there – the mood quickly changed among all involved and in particular among all of us who entered the “competition”, or scam if you so will. It simply felt as cheap trick to get attention and what could, and should, have been good attention for the responsible companies turned out to be nothing else than a fiasco. All wasn’t good in the hood at HostingCon 2008. Rough times in the web hosting industry, :)
