Social media has taken the internet world by surprise and attracts millions of new subscribers monthly. The new traffic stats cover the most popular social networking platforms including Facebook, Windows Live, Twitter and MySpace, showing a large increase in traffic as compared to last year.
According to the stats, Facebook received 598 million unique visitors in August 2010 which is almost a 54% increase than the same month last year. Twitter received a growth of 76% from August 2009, up to 96 million unique visitors. Twitter also managed to beat MySpace who received 95 million visitors for the same period with a 17% drop in traffic.
Twitter is expected to see an increase in traffic after it's upcoming front page redesign making it easier for users to access photos, videos and other services from Twitter's home page. Many Twitter users rely on third party applications to use the micro-blogging service which translates into a much higher actual user base. Twitter is also bringing innovation such as "Promoted Tweets" which will also result in a higher traffic rate.
Windows Live that combines web-based email and other services received a total of 140 million unique visitors, placing itself between Facebook and Twitter in traffic ranking. Google's Orkut received 54 million visitors for the same period.
The traffic stats were provided by comScore.
