PostgreSQL - A True Open Source Database Management System!

PostgreSQL is like any traditional relational database management system with common features and some unique enhancements in every new version release. Starting of as an academic project at the University of California PostgreSQL has come a long way and is today supported by both open source developers, commercial vendors and other companies. Based on a BSD license even when the POSTGRES project led by Michael Stonebraker was ended the development of the DBMS could continue. Thanks to the Berkeley Software Distribution license of PostgreSQL the software is free to use and modify without any restrictions or prohibitions. It's a true open source software.

What does PostgreSQL offer?

PostgreSQL has, like we mention above, a majority of the features found in other database management systems so it should be considered to be applicable for commercial use and web hosting services. Offering both a commercial and a community open source product PostgreSQL focuses on two different target groups. For the beginner who is in need of e.g. installation support and a graphic interface there's the Red Hat version. For the more experienced user with more specified needs the community version is a practical choice since its 100 % modifiable.

PostgreSQL's Red Hat version for Web Hosting

The Red Hat version is a customized PostgreSQL database management system offered to commercial users at a beginner level. But by offering the PostgreSQL DBMS signed, seal and delivered the most important preference is lost. It's adjustability. With its open source code and BSD license anything is possible. The only thing demanded by the user is knowledge and innovation. PostgreSQL represents the future in software development allowing contribution from all sources. And every new version that is released is a product of hard working programmers and investors thriving to make the best DBMS the world has ever seen.
